With the opening ceremony to the Olympic Summer Games in London only about a week away we thought we’d take a little tour of the facilities, most of which were specially built for with the games in mind.
As an overview, there are 30 venues that will host over 300 events, most of which are centralized in the Olympic Park in east London. Construction on the Olympic Park and surrounding village areas started in the summer of 2007 and was complete in July, 2011. The Olympic committee is proud that nearly all of the structures are permanent and will revitalize one of the most underdeveloped areas of the UK.
Here are a few of the most impressive venues:
Aquatics Centre - Modern Pentathlon, Swimming, Diving
Basketball Arena - Basketball, Handball
ExCel - Table Tennis, Wrestling, Taekwondo, Weightlifting
Horse Guards Parade - Beach Volleyball
Hyde Park - Triathlon, Swimming
Lee Valley White Water Centre - Canoe, Slalom
Lord's Cricket Ground - Archery
North Greenwich Arena - Gymnastics
Old Trafford - Football (Soccer)
Velodrome - Cycling, Track
